Harnessing the power of twitter I build a bot that corrects misspellings of espresso. This leads to some funny interactions between the bot and minor celebrities, including a congressman and a phone sex worker

At the Nature Intellegence Unit, Tom worked with a team who developed the idea of NI5, a public engagement activity aimed to reconnect young people with nature. You can test out the prototype or have a look at the slideshow.

Bat Detector + Smartphone = Fun

In an age where you can live most of your life via your smartphone it is perhaps surprising that there is little in the way of bat survey tools. Whilst there are a number of applications in the pipe line I found it frustrating that there was no cheap way to visualise sonograms in the field using my smartphone. I take on the task of connecting my bat detector to my phone for as low cost as possible.

Kestrel Cam - Year 1
A project Tom worked on with others from the CEH Wallingford innovation lab. Two IP cameras on a Kestrel box. Sadly the adult female fell ill in 2015 and the chicks did not survive. Here are a couple of the highlights from 2015.

EnergyCast - Envirohack
At Envirohack 2015 Tom and his team designed a set of web services and a smartphone app to help owners of solar panels get the most out of energy production. Their ideas made use of machine learning tools and weather data streams to predict power production and has applications for smart houses of the future. The team won two prizes for their use of R and advanced analytics.
